Forum Upgrade Complete; New Profile Policy - Illusion - 2003.01.22

Discus 4.0 is up and running, and I for one think it looks great. With this upgrade comes a slew of new features. I'm excited about the fact that all our forum information is now stored in an SQL database, meaning a far lower likelihood of Internal Server Errors and loss of posts, but what really has me going is the new user profile search feature. For a long time, we've discussed the creation of a character database for the AMRN. Now, with the means to search our profile database in many different ways, we can realize this dream without installing extra software.

I have added new profile fields and changed some of the existing ones so that now, the profile page reads like a Macross 2051 character sheet. (Click here for an example of a Macross 2051 character profile.) This will ensure that information is presented in a clear and mostly consistent way, and it will also give us the ability to search for all characters with green eyes, or all characters with the rank of captain, for example. (Note that the search includes fields that have been hidden by the user.) Those of you who have user accounts will need to update your profiles to fit this new layout; those of you who don't have user accounts will need to ask your GMs to create you one. You can also ask me, and I will happily help you out. All Macross 2051 players must have one user account for each character. (Academy cadets will, as always, receive accounts upon graduation and assignment of callsigns.)

Non-Macross 2051 players, check with your GMs to see if they have any special requirements for you concerning the new profiles. While many of the new profile fields are highly Macross 2051-centered, a lot of them are standard and can be used for any game. How your profile is displayed is customizable. Your GM may ask that you alter your profile to fit a game standard. Here are some examples of how that can be done:

• Any field you do not fill out on the profile sheet will not be displayed with your profile. This means that if you have a Lodoss character, you do not have to fill in things such as "service history" or "affiliation" or "rank" if these things don't fit your character, and there won't be empty blanks on your sheet when people view it.
• Each user account can have up to ten user-defined profile fields. You can use these to describe your character in any way that isn't already covered by the other fields. Your GM can also mandate a specific field name for everyone in that game to use, so that all profile sheets for a particular game are internally consistent.
• Your GM can also mandate that a field that isn't related to the game (such as "rank", perhaps) will be used for some other type of information. This second option, while it may end up looking funny, would make the entered data searchable through the database.

In addition to character accounts, all players may have one personal user account apiece for posting out-of-character. Be sure to put the username of your personal account in the "Player" field of each character account. This way, visitors to the site can search the Player field for your username and find a list of all your characters. (See my profile for an example of how you can integrate this search right into your profile.)

Some nice things besides the profile search came with this upgrade. User profiles may now have pictures attached, in jpg or gif format at a resolution of 200x400 pixels or less. Email post notification to registered users has been reactivated. And finally, there is now an integrated spell check feature. You'll find these options and more in the Profile Editor.

Forum Software Upgrade - Illusion - 2003.01.19

We will begin upgrading the Discus forum software to version 4.0 tonight, January 19. During the upgrade, the boards may be shut down temporarily. Hopefully everything will be set in place by tomorrow, but if not, everything will definitely be finished before Tuesday, January 21.

New Macross 2051 Character Acceptance Policy - Illusion - 2002.10.20

Academy Freeze - Mr. Justice - 2002.10.08

ATTENTION!

Due to the shortage of Macross 2051 GMs, the Academy will STOP taking applications AFTER November Squad begins. I will store all applications received until the GM shortage is resolved and new training squadrons can be formed.

Cadets currently in squadrons should begin looking for potential homes and begin communicating with the GMs of those boards if you haven't already received some kind of offer. All current cadets will be guaranteed a spot somewhere, but it may not be your first choice, so you are advised to begin looking for a potential assignment ASAP.

Players who want to help solve the GM shortage issue are encouraged to enroll in the P-GM Program. This is your community. Without your help it cannot improve.
